Sleep Spindles

چکیده
The development of EEC sleep-spindles in prematurely-born and full-term infants was studied to test an hypothesized impact of experience (longer extrauterine existence) upon innate maturational factors (EEG development). The age of otiset of sleep spindles and achievement of mature spindle quality occurs approximately 4 weeks earlier in prematurely-born infants than in full-term infants. Sleep spindle ontogenesis follows a regular time-dependent course. In full-term infants, well-developed sleep spindles first appear in the 4—8 week age range (44—48 postconceptional weeks) and are regularly preceded by rudimentary sleep spindles and specific rhythmic development of the sleep EEG.

Spike-wave discharges and sleep spindles in rats
Sleep spindles and spike-wave discharges are thought to originate from the same thalamic pacemaker. In the present work it is investigated whether sleep spindles and spike-wave discharges are also sensitive for the same drugs. Adult male WAGIRij rats were chronically implanted with frontal and occipital EEG electrode pairs. Rats were intraperitoneally injected with clonidine (0.00625 mgkg), phe...

متن کاملUsing Oscillating Sounds to Manipulate Sleep Spindles.
Introduction EEG oscillations known as sleep spindles have been linked with various aspects of cognition, but the specific functions they signal remain controversial. Two types of EEG sleep spindles have been distinguished: slow spindles at 11-13.5 Hz and fast spindles at 13.5-16 Hz. Slow spindles exhibit a frontal scalp topography, whereas fast spindles exhibit a posterior scalp topography and...
متن کاملSleep Spindles Characteristics in Insomnia Sufferers and Their Relationship with Sleep Misperception
Cortical hyperarousal is higher in insomnia sufferers (INS) than in good sleepers (GS) and could be related to an alteration in sleep protection mechanisms, like reduced density or altered characteristics in sleep spindles. The deficient sleep protection mechanisms might in turn enhance underestimation of sleep. This study's objective was to document sleep spindles characteristics in INS compar...

Epileptic activity in the form of spike-wave discharges (SWD) appears in the electroencephalogram (EEG) during absence seizures. A relationship between SWD and normal sleep spindles is often assumed. This study compares time-frequency parameters of SWD and sleep spindles as recorded in the EEG in the WAG/Rij rat model of absence epilepsy. Fast Fourier transformation and continuous wavelet trans...
متن کاملOptogenetically induced sleep spindle rhythms alter sleep architectures in mice.
Sleep spindles are rhythmic patterns of neuronal activity generated within the thalamocortical circuit. Although spindles have been hypothesized to protect sleep by reducing the influence of external stimuli, it remains to be confirmed experimentally whether there is a direct relationship between sleep spindles and the stability of sleep. We have addressed this issue by using in vivo photostimu...
